Early Life and Career
Chet Atkins was born on June 20, 1924, in Luttrell, Tennessee. He was the youngest of eight children born to sharecroppers Luther and Ida Atkins. Atkins's father was a talented musician, and he taught his son to play the guitar at an early age.
Atkins began playing professionally at the age of 12. He toured with a local band called the Tennessee Ramblers, and he also played on the radio and at local dances. In 1942, Atkins joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific during World War II, and he was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery.
After the war, Atkins returned to the United States and resumed his music career. In 1947, he signed with RCA Victor Records. Atkins's first hit record was "Mr. Sandman," which reached the top 10 on the country charts in 1954. Atkins continued to release hit records throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and he became one of the most popular country music artists in the world.
The Nashville Sound
In the late 1950s, Atkins helped to develop the Nashville sound, a new style of country music that was characterized by its smooth, polished production and its use of lush orchestration. Atkins produced a number of hit records for other artists in the Nashville sound style, including Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, and Don Gibson.
Atkins's own recordings in the Nashville sound style were also very successful. His album "At Home with Chet Atkins" (1962) won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Atkins continued to release hit records in the Nashville sound style throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
Later Career
In the 1980s, Atkins began to explore new musical directions. He recorded albums with jazz guitarist Les Paul and classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. Atkins also produced a number of albums for other artists, including George Benson, Earl Scruggs, and Dolly Parton.
Atkins continued to tour and perform until his death in 2001. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973, and he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
