Mana Tangata is a Māori political party in New Zealand. The party was founded in 1999 by Hone Harawira, a former Labour Party MP. Mana Tangata is committed to the self-determination of Māori people and to the principles of manaakitanga (hospitality),whanaungatanga (kinship),and rangatiratanga (chiefly authority).

History

Mana Tangata was founded in 1999 by Hone Harawira, a former Labour Party MP. Harawira had been a member of the Labour Party for 15 years, but he became increasingly disillusioned with the party's policies towards Māori. In 1999, he resigned from the Labour Party and founded Mana Tangata.

Mana Tangata contested the 1999 general election, but it failed to win any seats. However, the party did win a number of local government seats in the 2001 local government elections. In the 2005 general election, Mana Tangata won one seat in Parliament, with Harawira being elected as the MP for Te Tai Tokerau.

In the 2008 general election, Mana Tangata won two seats in Parliament, with Harawira being re-elected in Te Tai Tokerau and Kelvin Davis being elected in Te Tai Tonga. In the 2011 general election, Mana Tangata lost both of its seats in Parliament.

In the 2014 general election, Mana Tangata contested the election as part of the Internet Party. The Internet Party won one seat in Parliament, with Laila Harré being elected as the MP for Waiariki. However, Harré left the Internet Party in 2015 and joined Mana Tangata.

In the 2017 general election, Mana Tangata contested the election as part of the Māori Party. The Māori Party won two seats in Parliament, with Harawira being re-elected in Te Tai Tokerau and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer being elected in Te Tai Tonga.

Policies

Mana Tangata's policies are based on the principles of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and rangatiratanga. Manaakitanga is the principle of hospitality and generosity, whanaungatanga is the principle of kinship and family, and rangatiratanga is the principle of chiefly authority.
